Have you ever wanted to get a clean visual representation of what sectors are hot, where people are selling, or how the overall market is reacting? Many people often overlook the convenience of a stock market heat map.

In short, a stock market heat map is basically a big grid that breaks down individual sectors and stocks. Each stock is given its own rectangle or square. The size is usually relevant to the equities volume, and the color is a shade ranging from dark red to light green. Obviously you get the idea behind the color.

Different services offer various forms of heat maps, but they are usually all the same. A good free one can be found at Finviz.

You can play around with the options to get a clearer picture of what you want to look at (i.e. sector, stocks, performance). Overall, the stock market heat map is a great tool to get a great overview of how the stock market is moving.

When it comes to stock information, there is no shortage of resources. Some are free, while others require membership. One may be more focused on stock education, while another may provide more research material. Some may have better charts and others have better numbers.

You will be hard pressed to find any stock trader that uses one resource for all their needs. I, for example, go to different sites depending on what I’m looking for, what I need to know, how quickly I need this information, and/or what kind of chart I want.

The following is a list of the BEST FREE STOCK RESOURCES:

1. Google Finance - The instant I need to see anything about a stock, I will instantly go there and get a quick overview of the stock.

2. StockCharts.com – Probably one of the best free chart solutions out there. This free service allows you to annote, pick your indicators, and customize the chart however you want. They also have great articles that teach you about various technical analysis skills.

3. Finviz – A complete information dump on any stock. Want to know what analyst price targets are? Is there any insider buying? What related news is out there? The service also has an amazing free stock screener that allows you to choose various criteria from what kind of volume you like to what chart patterns are showing.

4. BarChart Top 100 – Automatically finds the best 100 stocks based on their criteria. A great place to look for various stock ideas.

5. Investopedia – The Wikipedia of all things finance. Need to know about a term, then start here.

6. StockTwits – If you instantly want to get thrown into a trader’s pit, then this is the place you NEED to be. Traders of all types and levels share their trade ideas, recommendations, and even what picks. You need to have a free Twitter account before you can use this service.

There are obviously a lot more viable resources out there. Eventually you should find the ones that work best for you, and eliminate all the other ones out of your life.

Probably the best way to see if your trading method is profitable is by putting it to the test against some historical data. Unless you have some expensive backtesting software, then that can prove to be a painful task.

Inspectd.com has come up with a free and pretty useful game that puts your skills to the test.

The game is pretty simple. You are given $100,00, then they show you a chart of a particular stock and you decide if you would buy, sell, or do nothing. Depending on how that real stock actually performed after that chart time frame, money will be added to or subtracted from your account.

Overall it is a pretty simple and unique game that doesn’t require you to sign up or download anything, so why wouldn’t you play it?
